Löyly: The Heart of the Finnish Sauna

Löyly (pronounced 'loy-loo') is the Finnish word for the steam created when water is poured on sauna heater stones. In Finnish culture, löyly is not just steam — it is the spirit of the sauna. The quality of the löyly is the measure of a sauna's quality.

How Löyly Works

When water is poured on hot stones (typically 300–500°C), it instantly vaporises into steam. This steam raises the perceived temperature of the sauna significantly — even though the actual air temperature may not change much, the humidity increases the rate of heat transfer to the body.

Good löyly is soft, enveloping, and long-lasting. Poor löyly is sharp, harsh, and dissipates quickly.

What Makes Good Löyly?

Stone temperature: The stones must be fully heated before adding water. A Huum or Harvia heater takes 30–45 minutes to heat the stones to the optimal temperature.

Stone quality: Large, dense volcanic stones (such as olivine diabase) retain heat best and produce the softest löyly. Wellness One saunas come with quality heater stones as standard.

Stone quantity: More stones means more heat capacity and better löyly. Huum heaters are particularly well-regarded for their large stone capacity.

Water quantity: A small ladle of water at a time produces the best löyly. Too much water at once produces harsh steam and can damage the heater.

Water quality: Some sauna enthusiasts add a small amount of birch extract, eucalyptus oil, or other sauna essences to the water for an aromatic löyly.

The Löyly Ritual

In the Finnish tradition, the löyly is a social ritual. The person nearest the heater — typically on the top bench — pours the water and is responsible for the quality of the löyly. The correct amount is debated with great seriousness.
