Preparing a Base for Your Outdoor Sauna

A suitable outdoor-sauna base must be confirmed for the selected model and the actual site. General principles are useful for early planning, but they do not establish a universal slab, decking detail, thickness, reinforcement schedule or construction tolerance.

The evidence that controls the base

Ask for the current model footprint, total design loads or required support points, finished levels, drainage criteria, service entries and permitted tolerances. These should come from the model-specific drawing, written site schedule or a written approval linked to the quotation. If a proposed base differs from that information, obtain written acceptance before construction.

Functional criteria

The confirmed base solution should provide:

  • sufficient load-bearing support for the selected model and its intended use;
  • the level and stability required by the current drawing;
  • drainage that prevents water collecting beneath or around the structure;
  • compatible support at the specified points or across the required footprint;
  • service routes and clearances coordinated with the installation plan; and
  • an accessible delivery and working area.

These are performance questions, not approval of a particular material. Ground conditions, slopes, existing structures and local exposure can change the correct solution.

Candidate base types are not automatic approvals

Concrete, paving systems and structural decking may all be considered in some projects. Their suitability depends on the selected sauna, support arrangement, sub-base or substructure, ground conditions and professional design. A photograph of another project or a general statement that a material is “suitable” is not evidence that a customer's proposed base is adequate.

Do not rely on soft, moving or deteriorated surfaces, and do not assume that an existing deck can accept the additional loads. Where structural adequacy is uncertain, use an appropriately qualified designer or engineer and provide the model information needed for the assessment.

Level, drainage and finished height

The required level tolerance must come from the current sauna documentation. Avoid expressions such as “perfectly level” unless a measured tolerance is supplied. Confirm the finished base height as well as the footprint so doors, access, cladding clearances, thresholds and surrounding landscaping work together.

Record the route of surface water and any water associated with cleaning or the installation. Drainage details are site-specific; this article does not prescribe a fall, channel, soakaway or other drainage system.

Access and services

Confirm how the sauna will reach the base and what working space the installation method requires. Measure gates, turns, slopes and overhead restrictions. The quotation should allocate responsibility for unloading, lifting, temporary access and making good.

Electrical service work must follow the exact heater/model schedule and equipment instructions. A suitably competent electrician should assess the actual property supply and complete the required design, installation, inspection, testing and certification.

Written pre-delivery confirmation

Before delivery, retain a dated record showing the approved base dimensions and details, finished levels, drainage approach, service positions, access plan and the person or organisation responsible for each item. This gives the customer, groundworker, electrician, installer and supplier one current set of information.

Information to give the groundworker or designer

Provide the exact model drawing and revision, support points, current weight/load information, finished floor or threshold relationship, service-entry positions and drainage criteria. Also provide photographs and measurements of the site, including slopes, retaining edges, existing structures and the delivery route. Without this information, a contractor can price only an assumption rather than the confirmed requirement.

Ask the proposed designer or installer to state the construction build-up, dimensions, finished levels, drainage approach and how the base responds to the observed ground conditions. If structural decking or another existing structure is involved, the assessment should address the complete load path rather than only the surface boards. Retain the written response with the project documents.

Avoid universal specifications

A slab depth, reinforcement arrangement, sub-base thickness, number of supports or level tolerance copied from another model may be wrong for the current site. The same applies to generic statements that all paving, composite decking or concrete is suitable. Material names do not establish workmanship, structural capacity or drainage.

Where a supplier provides a standard drawing, check that it is for the exact model and current revision. If the site team proposes a variation, send it back for written acceptance before work proceeds. This is particularly important where service penetrations, changes in level or support positions could affect the product.

A staged verification process

Before work starts, confirm the drawing, dimensions, construction proposal and responsibility allocation. During construction, retain photographs of concealed build-up and service routes where appropriate. Before delivery, measure the finished footprint and levels, check drainage and access, and obtain any sign-off required by the quotation. Do not hide a discrepancy with packing or an unapproved site alteration.

At handover, keep the base drawing or approval with the sauna specification, electrical documents, care instructions and guarantee terms. Future maintenance or relocation decisions are safer when the support and service arrangement can be traced.
