Alternating heat and cold is a longstanding practice, but research on contrast water baths should not be presented as proof that a high-temperature sauna followed by full-body cold immersion delivers broad health benefits.
What the Recovery Evidence Examined
A 2013 systematic review pooled 18 small, predominantly male athletic studies of contrast water therapy. It reported modest improvements versus passive rest for some soreness and strength-loss measures, but all trials were assessed as high risk of bias and there was little evidence of superiority to other common recovery methods [1]. These were water-bath protocols, not proof of a universal sauna–cold-plunge routine.
Acute Responses Are Not Long-Term Benefits
Heat and cold each produce acute thermal and cardiovascular responses. A 2009 review found that contrast baths may change superficial blood flow and skin temperature, but did not establish that those changes improve functional outcomes [2].
A 2025 study of 28 healthy young women measured acute heart-rate and blood-pressure responses during a supervised sauna, cooling and cold-immersion protocol. It explicitly described the findings as preliminary and did not establish long-term cardiovascular conditioning, immunity, recovery or mood outcomes [3].
No Universal Cycle

Safety Comes First
Cold immersion can trigger cold shock, while sauna adds heat and cardiovascular load. A working home cold dose, if you use one, is typically 1–3 minutes at 10–15°C, not 10–15 minutes.
