Evidence that post-exercise sauna reliably improves muscle recovery is limited and protocol-specific. Some small infrared-sauna studies report changes in perceived soreness or selected performance measures, but current research does not support a universal recovery protocol or a claim that traditional sauna accelerates tissue repair.

What the Systematic Review Found

A 2025 systematic review included 14 studies and 194 participants across sauna and hot-water protocols. Acute findings were inconsistent, evidence quality was low to moderate and protocol differences prevented meta-analysis. The authors concluded that definitive recovery or performance recommendations could not be made [1].

What Small Infrared Studies Can Show

In a crossover study of 16 male basketball players, one post-exercise infrared-sauna protocol improved perceived soreness and selected neuromuscular measures, but did not show broad sprint, strength or jump-height advantages [2]. A six-week study in female team-sport athletes found no improvement in muscle hypertrophy and no clear change across most performance outcomes [3]. These infrared results should not be presented as proof for traditional sauna.

Recovery Fundamentals Come First

Sleep, nutrition, hydration, appropriate training load and clinical rehabilitation where needed remain the foundations of recovery. Sauna can add physiological stress and may not suit every training context [4]. It should be treated as an optional preference rather than a guaranteed recovery intervention.
