- Set your real budget. Include delivery, base, electrics, heater and installation — not just the advertised product price.
- Understand the market. Three common tiers exist: kit, semi-installed, and full-service.
- Learn the hidden costs. Delivery, installation, heater, electrical work and base preparation often sit outside the headline figure.
- Decide: DIY or installed? Be honest about skills, time, lifting, weather and certification.
- Compare total costs. A £4,000 kit plus £5,000 of extras is not cheaper than a clear all-in quotation at the same total.
- Check construction quality. Insulation, glazing and materials affect running costs for the life of the building.
- Check the guarantee. Duration, exclusions, maintenance conditions and who actually honours the claim.
- Ask what happens after delivery. Support, spare parts, and who you call if something is wrong.
- Calculate 10-year cost of ownership. Purchase, energy, maintenance, water care where relevant, and replacement risk.
- Get your quote in writing. One scope, VAT treatment, exclusions and installation responsibilities.
The advertised price is almost never the working-in-the-garden price. If your absolute maximum is £10,000, the product budget after extras may be substantially lower. If your maximum is £15,000, all-inclusive solutions become comparable once hidden costs are added to kits.
